$90,000 A Month From A Free Ebook?
A brief history of name squeezes, opt ins, ebook incentives
and other intriguing stuff related to how much you bank this
week.
The secret story behind $90,000 a month from a free ebook
By Marlon Sanders
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
When you're just starting your online business, here is the
one key to your success:
With all the high tech and marketing wizardry on the Internet,
the basics have been, are and always will be -- basic!
Step one: Get people onto your list using a FREE or highly
attractive offer.
Step two: Get 'em to make purchase #1 from you.
Step three: Get 'em to make purchase #2.
Step four: Go for big ticket sales or recurring monthly
billing. You could move this step up to three or even two
in some cases.
In the field of Internet marketing , step one has just
gotten pummeled over time in terms of what it takes to do it.
Here are the stages opt-ins have gone through:
Stage one: The free report or newsletter
Originally, you could offer a free report or newsletter and
get people to join to your email list.
Jonathan Mizel coined and TRADEMARKED the term Name Squeeze.
He was smarter than me. I've originated and innovated many
things in this business but never had the smarts to trademark
them.
Then, later on, people deny what you did. If you trademark,
you got the PROOF. Mizel? He's a smart man.
Oh, other people CLAIM they invented the Squeeze Page. Ask
them whose coaching club they were IN. And WHO owns the
stupid trademark.
Yeah, ask them that. Watch them dance.
Stage two: The ebook
Later, Terry Dean popularized the free ebook in exchange for
the opt in. The problem became that everyone started offering
low quality, crappy private label rights ebooks for the opt in.
(Not that all plr ebooks are low quality.)
So people stopped opting in for those because they figured the
value was equal to the information -- worth less than nothing.
Some people went to offering a BUNCH of plr. OK. If one piece
of crap doesn't get your attention, I'll throw in a whole bunch
of it.
Again, I don't want to be overly critical of reprint rights or
plr. I'm just explaining the history and psychology of what
has gone done.
Stage three: The seven day ecourse
About the same time, Ken Evoy of Site Sell fame started the
whole 7-day ecourse craze. That became watered down into
7-day pitches and low quality information. Plus, the delayed
nature of the gratification didn't make it the ideal system
from the outset.
All of these incentives for opt ins were initially effective
but lost their punch as everyone and their dog jumped on the
band wagon.
Thus, Marlon's rule of the band wagon:
When everyone else jumps ON the band wagon, the results will
diminish. That doesn't mean jumping on the band wagon is
always bad. For example, some would call video on the Internet
a band wagon.
That's more like a here-to-stay thing. Not a band wagon. Kinda
like TV vs. radio. You couldn't really call TV a "bandwagon"
although in the early days I'm sure some did.
Anyway, usually, when everyone starts doing something, the
effectiveness goes down. Often, way down.
Kinda like sales letters.
When you see so many, the bar is raised as to what it takes to
create a sales letter that works. You can't use the same formula
I used years ago. You have to adapt and improve.
Everyone says you can be lazy in niches. And it's sort of true.
But you know what? I often see the BEST sales letters and
marketing being done in niches. I can't explain why. But that's
what I observe.
Stage four: The 50-page report
Rich Schefren wisely came out with a free report that was 50 or
so pages for his first launch. I don't know if he was the first
person to do a lead generator like this.
But his certainly hit big. He repeated his formula with "The
Attention Doctrine" manuscript. I think Rich has added in Stomper-
type videos to his mix.
Scott Boulch pioneered his List Virus software and method where you
pay affiliates .50 to $1.00 per download of the free report. This
is typically in the context of a big product launch.
Stage five: The case study videos
Stompernet innovated by putting out extensive in-depth case study
videos to get opt ins. Some of them are an hour long. I think they
may have added in videos.
You will notice things went from simple free reports to sequences
of very elaborate videos and PDF's. If you're competing in the
Internet marketing niche, and doing big product launches, this is
what it takes.
In most other niches, you can be 10X lazier. Although like I say,
sometimes the sophistication of what people do in niches is far
beyond what you might expect.
So where does that leave YOU?
How do you get people on YOUR list so you can move on with the
equation?
1. Test and try different things.
What's old can be new again. I know of one marketer just killing
it with a free ebook offer. Others have gone to offering free
video downloads. Others have gone to a free members site
structure.
2. Whatever you use as your opt-in incentive, you have to sell
your offer.
Don't assume people will want it because it's free.
There is no shortage of free information on the Internet today.
So sell your offer.
3. Watch your opt ins live!
This is a great idea I picked up today from Jason "video guru"
Moffatt. He keeps his aweber open live and watches opt ins as they
come in. That's just to keep opt ins on his mind.
I love that idea.
What you pay attention to grows.
What you don't, withers.
So now back to my grabber. I love that term. I guess Gary Halbert
started it way back when by calling the dollar bill at the top of a
direct mail letter a "grabber." More recently, terminology was
picked up in an outstanding book called Neuromarketing by Renvoise
& Morin.
My grabber to get you to read this article was the $90,000 a month
from an ebook.
So I have a new friend/consultant. I paid him for an hour of his
time 'cause he's an Adwords guru and "old school" marketer, which I
respect.
Anway, he's killing it on Adwords with a front-end opt-in incentive
of a free ebook. Yeah, that's it.
A free ebook.
Terry Dean would smile and feel vindicated. Personally, I was
shocked.
So what's his secret formula?
Step one: Offer incentive -- free ebook
Step two: Get email address
Step three: Send emails
Step four: Ask for money
How's that for back to the basics?
The one thing he does is builds a little more credibility for his
free ebook vs. what you normally see. Frankly, the campaign in terms
of execution is underwhelming.
The graphics are kinda ugly. The content is nothing revolutionary.
There isn't a real USP that screams at you.
It's just the basics very well executed.
But WHAT you offer doesn't matter.
Could be videos. Could be a printed book. Matt Bacak is using the
free CD. Could be a free membership. Could be about ANYTHING that
lights a fire under your customers and gets their tail end off the
sofa, as I think John Carlton would say in a little more spicy
language.
So my new friend gets 22% to 30% opt ins on the front end. I'm not
really sure the exact numbers. He changes the story a bit from
time-to-time.
Doesn't really matter. And he's in a niche vs. competing in the
fast-paced life of intensely competitive, superstar Internet
marketing "guru" launches.
My numbers right now are around 15% at my current name squeeze:
http://www.pushbuttonletter.com
That's the page I'm using as my opt in from a Google Adwords
campaign.
I'm still an Adwords hack to tell the truth. But I'm learning slowly
but surely.
I've never been super fast out of the gate. I'm more of a keep at
it and keep learning type.
Do you know what your numbers are on your opt-in page? Or if you
have a sales letter with an opt in somewhere within the page, do you
know your numbers?
Do you track them?
Have you tried a different incentive lately?
My new objective is 25% opt ins. If you get 1000 clicks from Google
organic or paid search and you get 250 opt ins, then convert a decent
amount of those into customers (2% to 10%), you have something you
can make bank with.
It's all numbers.
My friend spends $1.00 a click. 25% opt in. So out of 1,000 clicks
that's $1,000 spent and 250 opt ins. 10% buy at around $40.00.
That is $1,000. So basically he breaks even on the front end or
first sale and makes money on the back end or follow up sales.
That's pretty much the formula that makes any business successful.
Now, most people only get 5% to 15% opt-ins from Adwords from what I
hear. Like I said, to date my best is 15%. And converting 10% of
opt-ins is a challenge. 2% to 5% would probably be average,
although I haven't looked at the numbers lately.
Conversions depend on the offer -- what is the price and what do you
get for your money?
You test and try different things.
Oh, I'm NOT telling you WHO my friend is or what his business is.
Why? 'Cause I don't want people copying my friends ads and trying
to destroy his business.
The point of this article is: If you aren't getting enough people
into your marketing funnel, increase the attractiveness of your
incentive.
If you compete in the arena of Internet, using flanking and
guerrilla moves to avoid the need for Stomper style content videos
to generate leads.
If you're unfamiliar with flanking and guerrilla moves, you really
need to get my Red Factor training. I can't even remember if it's
still available or not. I think we took the offer off the market.
Oh well. You snooze, you lose.
I hope this article has given you insight. To reiterate, there's
a simple formula that works online. It IS the basis of what I first
wrote about years ago in "The Amazing Formula." And it still works
today and will always work.
Step one: Generate a lead by offering a very attractive low cost
or free offer
Step two: Follow up
Step three: Ask for money
Step four: Build customer relationships and provide good service
Step four: Ask for money again and again
Step five: Treat your customers well. They are the goose that lays
the golden egg
Step six: Smell the roses. None of us are here long enough.

Viral video - a classic example - check out the related videos - watch about 5 different versions by different people, I think you can aborb the info needed to do your own effectively after that :) The idea isn't to make sense of what you are watching, but to view the different elements that trigger off different emotional responses.
This one may come over as aggressive if you weren't brought up around this kind of music - so an alternative retro viral video could be the Apple Vs Mac video or the Burgerking Chicken or the "I like you" monkey's - failing that jut type "numa numa" into youtube.

Marlon's 12 Step Formula to Sales Letters that Work
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
When I started as a copywriter back in 1983, there wasprecious little to learn from. A few John Caples books. "The Robert Collier Letter Book."Dan Kennedy's book. Victor Schwab. A few others. Greatbooks in their own rights. But lacking in terms of astep-by-step, actionable formula in my opinion.
And my perspective is as one who ONLY had those books tolearn how to write sales letters from. It took me a long time to learn what you can grasp in afew dedicated months of study today. If you read muchabout how to write sales letters on the Net, you'll see over and over a 12-step formula for writing sales letters.
This is my formula. I created it. It's spread without attribution. But I want people to know the truth. That's all. I'm the ONLY person who can tell you where this formula came from and how it was developed. I can ALSO tell you that prior to this formula, the only things that existed as sales letter formulas were grossly lacking.
How about this barn burner: Attention, interest, desire, action. That's one that I had to learn from. No wonder it took me so long to learn. I dare you to take that formula and try to write a sales letter from it. It's what copywriters taught to make the process sound mystical and complicated, thus generating clients and jobs.
Or here's another one: Problem, agitate, solve. Alright. Nice formula. Totally lacking. There were other formulas. All lacking. Now, to be fair, the person who REALLY solved the puzzlewas NOT me. It was Bob Serling.
See, back in the day, I was a copywriter at a company called National Response Corporation. And they sold Bob Serling's products. Bob had a coursethat taught an intricate but solid 16-step formula forwriting sales letters. He was to my knowledge the first to TRULY codify a sales letter into practical, actionablesteps you could follow step-by-step.
The thing is, I felt a formula was needed that expressed how I had learned to write sales letters through the school of hard knocks. I created a 12-step formula and later codified it in "The Amazing Formula" as as chapter. And broke it out into a separate product. Actually, I first sold it in an ebook called WSOTM, Web Site Order Taking System. But that's going way back.
As proof, I might site the fact that I OWN salesletters.com. And I HAVE owned it a long freakin'time. That's for all the skeptics who think I take credit for things that don't deserve it. Anyway, I taught this formula at a lot of seminars. The old Boulder seminars with Jonathan Mizel and Declan Dunn. The Carl Galletti seminars.
Before long, everybody and their dog grasped onto the 12-step formula. Wrote it up in free ebooks. Wrote it up in articles and posted it on the Net. All fine. All well and good. Would have been NICE to give attribution. I guess they argue they changed SOMETHING. What? I'm not sure. But something.
Anyway, to make a long story longer, I found out at some point that even though I was teaching the 12-step formula, people were NOT following. That is how I created a whole entire category of software and products referred to as "sales letter generators." I created a product called "Push Button Letters" that forced people to follow the 12-step formula.
It was a blockbuster hit so many people created their ownsales letter software programs. More power to them. As long as it helps people. There are so many things that have been invented on the Internet, you could never keep track of who invented what. Or it would sure be tough. I don't even know that it's important that I get any credit.
I can tell you that Bob Serling deserves a lot for figuring out what he did. Corey, when he was living, bought the rights to Bob's outstanding sales lettercourse. The point of this article really isn't to pat myself onthe back, although I reckon I've done that a little too much. It's really about you, your sales letters and your sales.
Here are a few take aways I hope you find valuable.
1. You can now learn to write basic sales letters in a month or two, versus the 20 years it took me.
2. There are formulas you can learn that greatly speed your progress.
3. If you struggle, there are software programs that canhelp you follow proven formulas.

just thinking about social networking and it's impact on the biz op market
As a kiddie, like most girls i was into Barbie ans Sindy, had the mansion house the horses the four poster bed, playing out little games etc. - social networking feels like that on some levels and i wonder how this transferance from usually buying ebooks or software or info products - to buying pretend money with pretend money (or the option of real money to buy pretend money and 'premium pokes') effects the 'micro payment' markets - these micropayments are being funnelled into the latest internet platform in the form of images and video..
..ahg I lost the thread, there is a thread somewhere, it's to do with a shift in spending habits on a small scale that can effect a larger whole - rather like if 100 people buy a broom from your store - thouse mini payments are going to add up, then if someone else starts selling fancier brooms and the customers start going that way, you don't just loss the first sell, you lose the back end sale, the follow up sale and all these repeat sales

What Marlon Sanders has been up to
How To Profit With Facebook Marketing, Skype Out, Twitter, Submit Your Article And Blogging By Marlon Sanders ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
Hello, In this article, I'm going to share my own personal experiences overthe past few weeks using a variety of ways to get traffic to your web site. Keep in mind this traffic is from NEW stuff I'm mucking around with.
We get thousands of visits a week from existing marketing. I'mtalking about new stuff I'm doing. I wanted to give you a peak inside, so you can see my result as Iramp up some new methods. Now, this past week someone read one of my articles, called intothe office and asked, "Why do I need to promote or get traffic if I don't have a product yet?"
My answer to that is you can start building your list now, so whenyou do have a product to sell, you have a list to sell it to. Inaddition, in the meantime, you can sell affiliate products. I might add that if you use my methods, you can create your owninfo product in six weeks -- or less.
Let's move on to discussing my results.
1. How To Profit With Facebook Marketing
I've been pleasantly surprised at the visitors I've received from Facebook just from people seeing the URL of my blog on my profile page. I'm getting visitors every day. If you have no visitors, start a blog, get on Facebook and network.
You can have your own blog in 5 minutes by going to Wordpress.com and creating a hosted blog. My friend Tinu, the "Queen of Free Traffic" has a really good Facebook system and I plan on using it more. You'll likely also see me promote her product. Reading it is what convinced me to muck around on Facebook more.I learned new things. But even if I didn't, it would have beenworth it just because it gave me the kick in the tail end I needed to get it going!
2. How To Profit With Twitter Marketing
If you're out of the loop on this, Twitter is at Twitter.com. It's free. It's a way to send out very short notes on what you're up to. I've seen people with up to 5500 subscribers to their Twitter. Mine is rather anemic. I'm not seeing a payoff yet. But I plan to experiment more.
3. How To Profit With Blogging
Here's the thing I've found on blogging -- It's not as easy to get your blog set up to get traffic as you'd think. I'm just now getting mine in any kind of shape at all, and I still have work to do. In the past 7 days, I've received 254 visits and 54 clicks.
Whilesome of those came from my ezine last week, most are the result of my blogging. I have 163 total subscribers to my blog feed, where people read it in Bloglines, Google Reader or another RSS reader. That's not many subscribers. But I haven't been doing this long. That number is down from 171 a few days before.
If you blog, I'm told you need to make one or more posts daily to really get some action on Google. That takes maybe 30 minutes a day. I think the payoff is there long term. But there IS a learning curve. And it does take that consistent effort.
4. How to Profit With Podcasts
It took a bit to get Podpress plugin installed and working on thelatest version of Worpress. We're now designing a special page to put my podcasts on. I bought this new Macbook and will use Garage Band to make podcasts. If you have a PC, Audacity is free and actually has some featuresGarage Band doesn't.
Garage Band has the edge in terms of easy-of-use. I'll say this: If you aren't good at using computers, go the Macroute. Podcasting as a Meme or concept that spreads virally is on the wayout. But if you look at usage by the media, it's up 40%. I'm going to try a little podcasting and see what happens.
The cool thing is, it's free to get your podcast listed in iTunes.I actually wrote an article about how to do that on my blog. And iTunes gets a LOT of traffic! Plus, there are many podcastdirectories you can get listed in. And those listings can get ranked in Google,MSN and Yahoo. So why not do it?
5. How To Profit With Skype Out
I just bought the coolest tool. It's a little phone that plugsinto the USB of your computer and lets you make Skype calls that are amazingly clear! The thing actually works. Here's the profit angle: It has a record button. With oneclick you can record conversations!
You can do testimonial interviews, product interviews and even do group calls, depending on which phone you get. I plan to do a little write up on my blog about this andpost a picture. The thing is, it took a bit to figure outhow to make the sound broadcast through the phone.
This is really awesome. Now, anywhere I'm on wifi, I canplug this phone in and make phone calls. I'm thinking ofsending one to a friend in the Philippines who has Internet access but has to pay a lot to make long distancephone calls!
6. How To Profit With Submit Your Article There's an online service you can use to submit yourarticles called: SubmitYourArticle.com. Another one I planon using is called Article Marketer. Anyway, I just used this yesterday to submit an article.
I haven't done this in a long time because I always left thedoor open for my affiliates to promote us. Since a lot of affiliates are now just promoting theproduct launch of the week, we are going back in marketingmode. When I say "we," I mean my team. The awesome thing is you get stats on your submissions. That's sure an improvement from the old days.
So far, since yesterday, I've had 24 article views, 12people have published it and 1 subscribed to my contentfeed. I can't say those are world-beater numbers yet. But it's agood start. And it's only been a day. I plan to take each article and put it on my blog, send itout through a submission service and turn it into a videoand podcast using Matt Bacak's brilliant A9 formula. Thanks Matt for figuring that out!
One reason I hesitate to publish things like this is Internet marketing is a very ego driven field. Keep inmind the results above are from only a few days or weeks effort. There's always that person who comes along and says,"Well, my articles get 10 million views." Or whatever. Oneoneupmanship.
Yeah, and they likely use methods you may not feel comfortable using or they're on a very wide-interesttopic vs. a specific niche. I wanted to post result that anyone can achieve with amodicum of effort. That means you. You can do what I've done and likely get similar results.
